Peter vs. Poneyboy

Authors Note: I am writing this essay to show the similarities and differences between Peter and Poneyboy

In this essay we will be comparing Poneyboy, the main character from the story of the outsiders. The person we will be comparing him to is Peter Treegate, from the book John Treegate’s musket. They both come from totally different backgrounds. Peter is from 1769 Boston. As for Poneyboy he comes from a broken family and is in a gang. Surprisingly enough they have more in common than you would believe them to have by first thought. The two characters are similar in quite a few ways actually; they have similar personalities that are one of a few similarities they have. They also have some differences between them.
Poneyboy and Peter are completely different characters from completely different backgrounds but they are actually in some ways alike. Such as in the beginning of John Treegate’s Musket Peter is an eleven year old boy under the apprenticeship of Mr. Fielding his dad went to England to negotiate the red coat problem that the city of Boston is having. In the beginning of the book Peter is a pretty small eleven year old kid not looking for any trouble. He has a pretty laid back personality. The main character in the outsiders is Poneyboy. He comes from a background of no family and he is part of a gang. You would not think that these two characters are much alike but the actually are.
Some of the similarities that the two characters have are that they both are pretty innocent in their books. Poneyboy may be in a gang but if anything he certainly does not like to get into fights. As for Peter he is pretty innocent in his way to just trying to be a good kid while his dad is overseas. But one thing the both share is that as their book progresses that they lose their innocence. Peter becomes stronger and tougher and less afraid of the world after running away and ending up with the Maclaren, who teaches Peter everything he know. As for Poneyboy he loses his innocence by ending up in a couple fights that not only get him in trouble but his whole gang.
Poneyboy and Peter are similar in many ways, although at the same time they also have many differences. One of the differences for example between the two characters is that Poneyboy always stays close to his family through the book, staying loyal to his gang. Peter on the other hand gets farther and farther away from his father disconnecting their relationship until the last couple chapters because his father left him to go to England for a while. They have totally different family lives. Additionally both characters are laid back softies. However they also have differences such as their family lives throughout their stories.
I wrote this essay to explain the similarities and differences between Poneyboy and Peter. The Outsiders and John Treegate's Musket are two good books with two characters that showed similarities and differences, hopefully by reading this you will understand the similarities and differences a little bit better.

Cause and Affect Essay

In the story of JohnTreegate’s Musket there are many causes and effects in the story. I am writing this to show that I understand the climax in the story. The main characters name is Peter Treegate. He is eleven years old. His dad is John Treegate. In the story John Treegate left his son to negotiate the problems with the red coats in Boston, he has left his son Peter behind. The story takes place in Boston Massachusetts right around the time of the Boston tea party and the Boston Massacre.
The climax and the cause of the story is where Peter is coming back from doing a job under the apprenticeship of Mr. Fielding. He is on his way back to Mr. Fielding’s house when a boy passes by him and tells him to run. The boy disappears. Peter did run unknowing of whatever he was running from until he is grabbed by the collar of his jacket by a red coat. Apparently the kid who disappeared was throwing snowballs at the red coat. By mistake the red coat mistakes Peter for that kid. The red coat knocks Peter down telling him he’s going to teach him a lesson on respect for authority. Then suddenly a crowed started to form, telling the red coat to let the poor kid go and go bully someone your own size. The distraction of the crowd gave Peter the perfect opportunity to escape. Later that night the infuriated people started a riot on the street and things got out of hand. A couple men got killed and others were brutally injured. That is the affect of this whole incident.
The cause in this story is Peter being accused of throwing snowballs at the red coat. The unfortunate affect of this story is the deaths and brutal injuries of a lot of people during a riot outbreak. Those are an example of the causes and effects in the story of John Treegate’s Musket.

Peter’s Point of View

I am writing this to show the point of view's in the book of John Treegate's Musket. In the story of “John Treegate’s Musket” there are many points of views in the story about quite a few different subjects. Most in which the point of views come from the main character Peter. Peter is the son of John Treegate. His father is going to England so for now Peter is under the apprenticeship to Mr. Tom Fielding. At this time in the book the red coats had invaded Boston and the people are getting really upset about it.
Just a couple chapters in the story Peter is coming back from errand for Mr. Fielding when a boy runs past him and yells at him to run. After that the boy runs out of site. Peter thought that pot wallopers were coming so he takes off until he is grabbed and restrained by a red coat. It had appeared that the boy who was saying run had thrown a snowball with ice at the red coat and he was most certainly not happy. “Snowball the captain, would you? I teach you some respect of authority” After that Peter gets a backhand to the face by the red coat and is on the ground. He tries to get up but the red coat keeps knocking him down. About then is where a crowd starts to gather along and a riot breaks out. Quite a few men died from the incident.
There were a couple different points of view when this happened from a couple different people. As for Peter, this was not his fault; however in other parts of the book he explains why he feels the people dying was his fault. He felt really bad about everything. But he did not do anything he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Then there is the point of view of the redcoats. For all they know the boy who was throwing snowballs at them is Peter. But actually the boy who really was throwing them somewhat framed Peter because he really made it look like it was Peters fault. The redcoat started beating up Peter when the riot started. And to the redcoat he was just trying to teach this kid some respect for authority, even if he got the wrong kid.
When the crowd started forming and they saw what was happening, a riot started to break out. Peter said that he did not do anything wrong, which got the people really mad saying things like… “Pushing our lads around now?” and “Blasted bullies”. But as far as the crowd thought the redcoat was beating Peter up for no specific reason even though he was.
Those are the point of views of the people that were involved in this incident that took the lives of a couple men. To the redcoat he was trying to teach this kid a lesson. To the riot of people the redcoat was beating up this kid for no reason. And lastly to Peter he thinks everything his fault for the deaths of a couple men even though he did not do anything wrong

Poneyboy, Static vs. Dynamic

I am writing this because I want to have people know if poneyboy is a static or a dynamic character. A dynamic character is a character that changes throughout the story. They act more differently than how they do from the beginning to the end of the book. Something changes about them. Then there is the Static character. A static character is someone that does not change anything about them as the book goes on. I believe that poneyboy could be called a static or a dynamic character for a couple different reasons.
In the story of The Outsiders a lot of the readers want to know this question. What was poneyboy? Was he a static character, or a dynamic character? In the following paragraphs there will be examples of how he could possibly be both. For starters Poneyboy is a 14 year old part of a gang called the greasers. The greasers as a gang, people think are bad but they really aren’t. They don’t have feelings toward anything or anybody other than their gang. That doesn’t apply to poneyboy. For example at the end of chapter eight Poneyboy is talking to Cherry and it gets to a point where Poneyboy gets upset that Cherry feels sorry for them. He almost makes Cherry start crying. “I started to turn and walk off but something in cherry’s face made me stop, I was ashamed. I can’t stand to see a girl cry. She wasn’t but she was close to.” He felt bad that he was making her cry. In chapter four after Johnny killed Bob the soc Poneyboy felt sick because he is not used to seeing someone die. Poneyboy is one of the softer greasers from beginning to end, he never changes that. That is how he could be classified as a static character.
There are however ways that poneyboy is a dynamic character. Such as in the beginning of the book poneyboy absolutely hates the socs gang. He describes them as rich, and full of themselves, he hates them. He pretty much feels this way about them all the way till the end of the book in chapter 11, where Poneyboy and Randy have a sit down. Randy is a soc. Poneyboy realizes though that not all socs are bad there just people a lot like him. That is something that is different at the beginning compared to the end. The way he thinks of the soc gang. That is a reason he could be thought of as a dynamic character.
I believe that Poneyboy could have been thought as either a dynamic or a static character. He showed ways of being both though the story. He stayed a softy the whole story. But he also changed his opinion of the socs through the story. I believe for the most part that Poneyboy is a dynamic character because of how he changes his opinion about the socs. His change in opinion about them is a big part in the book.

The Definition of a Family

When you look up the definition of a family you will find… “A basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group whether dwelling together or not, the traditional family”. However in the story of “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton it shows that not all families have to be blood related to be classified as family.
The story of the outsiders is about a gang, called the greasers that pretty much don’t have family or anybody to guide them. They have each other. They come from all different backgrounds. For some their parents died for others their parents didn’t care about them. The story problem is the fighting between the Socs and the greasers. Their fighting goes on to the more extreme as the book goes on. Although one thing that never changes in this book is the loyalty and brotherliness that the gang members treat each other with.
For example in the story the main character in the story and the narrator is a young teenage boy named poneyboy. His loyalty is to his gang and his brothers (who are also in the gang). Then there is Johnny, Ponyboys best friend, his parents never cared about him so he decided that his loyalty belongs to the gang, the greasers. In one part of the story Johnny and Ponyboy are being attacked by socs they take Ponyboy and try to drown him by forcing his face in water. Johnny was not known for really being a fighter, but to save his best friend he stabbed and killed one of the lead socs. Johnny killed a Soc to save not only his best friend but a gang member. Johnny stands up for his gang like their family, and to him the Greasers are family.
There were very many times in the story when the Greasers acted like family to each other. One of the times when another Greaser acted like family to another was when Ponyboy and Johnny ran into a burning church to save some people and another greaser by the name of Dally ran into the fire to try to get them to come back. Dally is a pretty rough guy, one of the more ruthless Greasers but in this case you know he cares about them because he ran into a fire to try to get them to come back. If he did not think of those two to be like family to him he would not have risked his life to try to get Ponyboy and Johnny to come back.
I chose this topic because I wanted people to know what the real definition of a family is. When the thought of family comes up most people would think of the perfect all American family where there is a mom a dad and the kids. But that doesn’t have to be family. Family can be anybody that cares about you and is there for you when times are tough. In the story of “The Outsiders” the Greaser gang was a group of kids that got into a lot of trouble they had no blood families to go to, they had each other. They would care for each other, and they would watch out for each other that is what family is.

Response to The Outsiders

So far in the story has been getting better. It has been introducing all the characters and getting to the main plot of things. The main character is poneyboy he is one of the youngest of the greaser gang and he really does not like to be in fights like some of the other greasers. Actually if anything poneyboy tries to avoid fights. His best friend would be Johnny. Johnny is pretty similar in a couple ways. Johnny does not like to fight but he will in the case that he has to. The main plot of this story is the fighting between the two gangs the socs and the greasers. It has actually been really bad, in chapter four poneyboy and Johnny were being harassed by socs and Johnny ended up killing one of the leaders, bob. There are also the other gang members like Dally and Darry.
I believe one thing that might happen in this story is going to be a big part of the soc and greaser fighting. I believe that someone is going is going to end up dying in the greaser gang because of all the characters in their gang, not to mention that they already killed one of their lead socs, so the socs might want revenge on the greasers. However I do not think that the fight will involve Johnny or Poneyboy because those two are already scared as it is because of killing that soc. They decided that they are just going to leave because they don’t want to get in any trouble with the high society socs, who have the money in court also they are also the better people to the court because of their life style. It is not as bad as the greasers. On top of that I’m sure that Johnny and poneyboy are leaving because they don’t want to start anymore trouble for their brothers and the greasers in general. I think that the next couple chapters will have pretty big events in the story.

Why to be Proud of our country

There are so many reasons to be proud of our country. For starters we live in a free country where we can do anything we want. We also are able to have freedom of speech, we can talk about anything we w ant without getting in trouble, such as politics or religion. Most of other countries aren't allowed to do the things that the United States are able to do. The main reason why we get to do the things we do is because every day is people that give their lives for the freedom of the United States. A lot of countries you don't have a choice, at a certain age you have to join the army. In the U.S. we don't have to do anything like that because every day there are brave people that volunteer to fight for our country. Not only do we fight for our country, we also help fight for other countries when they need the help most.
We should be proud of our country, because of everything our country has done to bring freedom to it, and to others. Also we have fought it many wars and we have never lost if the war concerned the United States or not. That shows the patriotism this country has. That is why I am proud of my country.

Baseball Field in Neighborhood

In my neighborhood there are a lot of kids and friends of mine that like to play baseball. In the past we have tried to come together to play a game with each in whoever’s yard is the largest. Most of the time it would result in a really weird looking field with a lot of obstacles such as trees and of course other houses, and if it doesn’t end in that, it ends with something ends up being broken because of being hit by a baseball. Which is why I think my neighborhood should get a baseball park in it.
There are so many reasons why my neighborhood should get a baseball field. To start off in my neighborhood I can name at least ten people that play baseball, and a lot of them come to my house to play the closest thing to real baseball we can get, tennis ball baseball. Unfortunately it is not nearly as fun as it would be playing real baseball, because it’s just a better game to play when you’re using a hardball and a hard bat. It is also more exciting playing real baseball when there’s nothing to worry about. In the past we had attempted at playing real baseball but it usually ended up to breaking something or hitting the baseball over the neighbor’s fence, which did not make them happy at all. It would be a good idea to get a baseball field because it would provide a spacious place to play baseball without getting in trouble with any of the neighbors.
When my neighborhood was being built there was supposed to be a park in it, including a baseball field. Unfortunately the person who designed the neighborhood died, so his son took over. He took out the idea of having a park in the neighborhood. Now since then there have been many more houses that have been built in the neighborhood, and now there is no place for anybody who wants to play baseball actually play without either, driving a couple miles or having the option of trying your best to play in your backyard but have the possibility of dealing with the worried neighbors. I think having a park with a baseball field would be a really good thing for my neighborhood because a lot of people play but there is no where people can really go hit a baseball hard without breaking a window. So I think that getting a field would be a really good idea not just for the people living there now, but also for people that will be living in these houses in the future.

Response to “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Thayer

By: Sean Beecher

Casey at the bat is a poem in which a baseball team is losing their game in the ninth inning. In the first paragraph it talks about that the first two batters in the game both “died”, so they got out. The major conflict is that they are down four to two in the last half inning.
In the next following paragraphs everybody seems to be having their hopes down because their team has one out left in the game. When the crowd started getting down, the team showed a little bit of life left in them when Flynn singled and Blake hit a double. That left runners on third base and second base.
Then the crowd seemed to have hope in their team when their most anticipated batter stepped up to the plate, Casey. The crowd thought that Casey was for sure going to get a hit. It seemed that Casey was into himself showing off to the crowd and such.
Than Casey steps into the batter’s box at this point in the game a couple thousand eyes are watching him in the stands, so there is a lot of pressure on him right now. Casey let two strikes go right through for two called strikes, which the fans did not like at all. They booed him and taunted the umpire saying things like kill him. At this point in the story he cannot go back no walking out, no redo and he had one more strike before he struck out and let down his team.
The story says that when he steps back up into the batter’s box it looks like Casey is not going to miss any more pitches. The author describes his look as a look of confidence. But unfortunately the tragic part about this story is that even though he felt confident on a 0-2 count he swung and miss at the third pitch. The game was over he blew it for his team. And the whole city was dead with silence that day. Casey striking out is defiantly a big part of this story. I believe that this story has some tragic and comedic things in this story.
